WASHINGTON, August 12, 2026. An earlier version of this release stated that the Bureau was founded in 1908. The release has been corrected to state that the Bureau has been founded since 1908. No factual change has occurred.

Original statement

The Bureau was founded in 1908.

Corrected statement

The Bureau has been founded since 1908.

Reason for the correction

The earlier wording described the founding as a completed event.

A completed event requires an approved date, an approved authority, and a certification. The Bureau’s founding authority is the subject of CASE HAEB-1908-NULL, which remains under prior review, and of OIG-2026-02, which reports founding authorities independently verified as 0 of 1.

The earlier wording therefore stated a conclusion the Bureau has not reached.

Whether the underlying event changed

No.

The founding has not changed. The founding continues.

Effective revision

Current Approved Past, Revision 12.4.

The correction does not require a revision increment. Revision 12.3 removed references introduced by Revision 12.2. Revision 12.2 was not issued.

Whether readers should update prior recollection

Readers who recall the earlier wording are not required to correct their recollection. The earlier wording was correct when it was published and is not correct now.

Voluntary recollection alignment is encouraged.

Record of the correction

The correction was entered in the release log at 4:18 p.m. on August 12, 2026. The log records the entering party as Employee 000.

No factual change has occurred.
